5 Best Hydroponic Supplements for Blooming

The purpose of the nutrient SUPPLEMENTS is to provide those secondary macronutrients and micronutrients that the basic N-P-K fertilizers either lack or have in small quantities.

The secondary macronutrients and their primary function in plants:

  • Calcium (Ca) – Used in cell wall structure. Also used to form new growing points and root tips.
  • Magnesium (Mg) – Important in the protein structure, chlorophyll and photosynthesis.
  • Sulphur (S) – Forms part of the chlorophyll.

The micronutrients are and their primary function in plants:

MICRONUTRIENTFUNCTION
Boron (B)Used for the differentiation of cells, i.e in new growth and fruiting
Copper (Cu)Takes part in many functions such as photosynthesis, respiration, metabolism. It also enhances flavour in fruit and colour in flowers
Iron (Fe)Important for the synthesis of chloroplast proteins and enzymes
Manganese (Mn)Enables of nitrogen assimilation in plants. It is needed in functions such as photosynthesis
Molybdenum (Mo)Without it plants cannot use nitrates to make proteins
Zinc (Zn)Important in activating growth regulators

If you are interested in finding out about the role of each of those elements and their deficiency symptoms check my post on the 12 Plant Nutrient Deficiency Symptoms and How to Fix Them.

I have reviewed 15 fertilizers and here I present you with the 5 best hydroponic supplements dedicated to assisting plants through the blooming stage which of course has an impact on yields.

Although these products guarantee more and denser flowers, my review is based on the:

  • ingredients of each product – whether natural or chemical
  • impact of the product on plant’s health and yields
  • safety of ingredients
  • availability on the market
  • user reviews

My Top Pick

My top pick is the Botanicare Liquid Karma because it is made of natural substances (e.g. plant extracts, kelp seaweed extract, seabird guano, fish meal) and it contains all those enablers of nature such as Vitamins, Amino-acids, Carbohydrates, natural growth Hormones and Humic and Fulvic acids. I explain a bit further down why these are important. In brief, these natural enablers allow the plant to function properly, be tolerant to stresses and fight pathogens. The overall health of the plant is significantly improved thus leading to higher quality yields.

It is not a straightforward answer as to which one is best, because there is chemistry involved, and there is no one-size-fits all approach. In addition, in many cases the trace element content of the products is a “secret recipe” of each manufacturer and they do not want to state the exact concentrations. In most cases they state that trace elements are present. Kudos to Beastie Bloomz from Fox Farm that give an ingredient detailed list!

Botanicare Liquid Karma

Liquid Karma from Botanicare is a great non-conventional supplement, useful for all stages of plant growth. It contains “full complement of metabolically active organic compounds not found in regular plant foods or supplements”. It promotes high metabolic activity, inducing the production of large amounts of energy, quickly converted into growth, flowering and fruit yield at each respective stage. It contains all those essentials to ensure a healthy plant leading to high-quality yields:

  • Fermented Compost Solution: helps in achieving healthy vegetative growth and flowers, healthy fruits and vegetables full of flavor.
  • Amino acids: used in the formation of proteins and enzymes and the activation of building t-RNA and DNA.
  • Vitamins: most importantly, vitamins are the co-factors of enzymes that are needed as catalysts in biochemical reactions. So with vitamins you help your plant’s metabolism and the formation of molecules such as carbohydrates.
  • Auxins and cytokinins: derived from plant extracts, auxins and cytokinins are hormones that regulate growth and stimulate cell elongation and division respectively.
  • Humic and Fulvic acids: enhance plant growth and support the plant to fight pathogens.
  • Seaweed extract: contains minerals and elements from the ocean and metabolically active carbohydrates all of which stimulate plant growth.
  • Carbohydrates: direct supply of energy to your plants with carbohydrates which are known to assist ripening.

General Hydroponics Liquid KoolBloom

The General Hydroponics Liquid KoolBloom promotes high flowering leading to bulkier fruits. It promotes production of essential oils and aromas in flowers and herbs. So great if you grow any type of herb but good as well for bulkier and flavoursome fruit. It contains vitamins and nutrient transporting acids that help with nutrient absorption and the overall plant’s health.

In reality, KoolBloom due to its high Potassium content can be used for ripening as well, but reduce the dosage as it may be too much for the ripening stage. Add 1-2 teaspoons (5-10ml) per gallon (4 litres) of nutrient solution. Repeat every week for the entire flowering stage and then either reduce at ripening stage or follow the recommended dosage from General Hydroponics.

Botanicare Hydroplex

Botanicare Hydroplex helps fruit setting and creates larger flowers and fruit. It contains vitamins that help plants resist against external stress. The additional amino-aids and trace elements support the natural production of enzymes, chlorophyll, essential oils and sugar leading to denser flowering and higher and better yields. It is also packed with vitamins that play a significant role in enzymatic functions that promote plant health. Add 1/2-1 teaspoons (2.5-5ml) per gallon (4 litres) of nutrient solution. Repeat every week for the entire flowering and ripening stages.

Humboldt Secret Supplies Flower Stacker

The Humboldt Secret Supplies Flower Stacker increases the density and health of flowers, enhances natural flavor, aromas and essential oils leading to better ripening and quality of yields. It contains Vitamin B1 which helps with better plant establishment and more efficient metabolic reactions, thus developing healthy plants. Some users though have reported that it has burnt their plants, but it is not reported under what conditions that has happened. Use from week 3 of the flowering stage all the way through to ripening, starting from 3-4ml/gallon in the first two weeks of flowering, then 5-6ml/gallon for two more weeks and then 7-8ml/gallon till the end.

Its basic N-P-K nutrients: 0-7-5

Rating on Amazon: 4.6/5.0

Fox Farm Beastie Bloomz

The Beastie Bloomz from Fox Farm is highly concentrated as it is in powdered form (hence high P and K ratios). It contains a lot of secondary elements, equally important though. Out of the 5 reviewed products, it is the one with the most secondary elements of inorganic nature. It maximises blossom development and dense buds leading to high yields. If you use with other products, only use ¼ to ½ teaspoon per gallon (4 litres) of nutrient solution. That will last for two weeks. Though you should always check your plant’s health and if you find that it is not reacting too well, then reduce the dosage.

Although it is a great trusted product, what I do not like about it is that some of the ingredients used to make this product contain substances that are known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. Not that Fox Farm add them in, but are present in the ingredients they use. So handle with care.
